We all have things we’re not keen on. We all have things we’d rather avoid. For some of us though, we suffer with far more than a mild dislike of something. It can even go as far as being a paralysing, overwhelming fear that really does interfere with the smooth running of our lives. And yes, if we could stop – like people might casually suggest we should – of course we would have done by now. With phobias, our brain thinks it’s doing the right thing and is trying to protect us, but in fact we’re being held captive by its excessive desire to keep us safe. If we have a specific phobia, such as creepy crawlies, the dentist or flying, we can gently work together to ease our way to a future that is free from the shackles of excessive fears.
